Frequently asked questions

Q.Are any religious practices observed?
A.No. Religious symbols such as Buddha's etc., simply reflect the Oriental decor of the dojo.

Q.What clothing will I need?
A.You will need a Gi(uniform)in white, black or blue which may be Karate or Judo (preferred) style. These can be purchased from any martial arts supply or from Chan's Imports in the Padre Staples mall. If you tell him we sent you, Chan offers a 10% discount. The web offers many good buys; check links at the bottom of this page. Also get a pair of compression shorts to wear under your Gi.

  • Q.What do my dues go for,and when are they paid?
A.They pay for the dojo costs, expenses and taxes. The Instructors are not paid, they teach out of love for the Art. Please treat them with respect, they are not the hired help. We prefer payment at the first of the month, but we are flexible. (consult your instructor) You are not required to enter into a contract.
  • Q. Do I have to attend all four weekly classes?
A.No. Most students do best taking two classes a week. Remember Jujitsu is best learned over time. I teach only four days a week to accommodate the schedules of my students, and since I take a hands on approach to teaching, I require a few days rest to recuperate.
  • Q.How many ranks are there and how long does it take to get a black belt?
A.Phan-ku Ryu Jujitsu ranks students as white(novice),brown(intermediate)or black belt(advanced)levels with teaching certificates for those who qualify. All awarding of ranks depend on the student's dedication and ability.
